Big Damn Sin City vs Deluxe Editions
Main Post:
I am interested in collecting Frank Miller's Sin City but I am unsure which is the correct avenue to go with.
Big Damn Sin city = single purchase / large book that may wear with multiple rereads.
Deluxe Edition = multiple purchases / less likely to be damaged with rereads.
I would love to hear some opinions on which avenue I should go. Ty

If you're talking about those fancy new slipcase deluxe editions, they're gonna be expensive to get the whole set. If you get the timing right, Big Damn is very affordable.
Of course, the individuals will always be easier to read. Though just one of them may likely cost you more than the whole Big Damn collection
Does anybody know if Big Damn Sin City is going out of print?
Main Post:
What the title says. Want to grab it but the only place is Amazon and it’s at full retail.
Anyone have any ideas?

It has gone out of print at least once before and had a reprint. But Dark Horse is putting out brand new editions of it, both super premium and very affordable paperback versions, it's possible that the Big Damn edition is going away.
Is Sin City a good movie? Why or why not?
Main Post:
I recently watched it for the second time and I wanted to hear what Reddit thinks of this one. Whether you think its good or bad, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I don't really want to go too into my thoughts on the movie here because I don't want to steer the discussion too hard, but I will say that I did not like it on my second watch. I'm curious so lets discuss!

On a technical level (digital backlot, high contrast look, etc) it is pretty impressive. Nothing else looked like that before. All the flaws of Miller's writing really show when spoken out loud and in how the characters interact. Some of the performances are iffy but a lot of that is due to how slavishly they stuck to Miller's scrit from the comics. I've seen it 3 times and it's a movie that i'd feel deserves a rewatch every 5-10 years
IJW: Sin City (2005)

I watched Sin City and hated it
Now, my gf recommended me this movie and i agreed that we watch it together. She has in general a great taste in movies. She introduced me into the medium (i prefer reading) and made me fall in love with Studio Ghibli movies and other great works of cinema. Therefore i trusted here.
This movie might have shattered my trust in her taste (just exaggerating of course). Now, she didn't like it as much this time as well, but i was horrified by it. The sexism of the characters was so overblown that it wasn't even funny anymore. The stoic, male, overly violent characters annoyed the hell out of me. It is not that the portrayal of more toxic male figures is an issue for me, i love "the Wolf of Wallstreet" and "American Psycho," but those movies are also undermining those characters and are self-conscious about those traits. "Sin City" was just a celebration of senseless violence. Every woman was a slut/prostitute and every dude was the same emotionally stunted "tough guy." No character was developed interesting. I've searched long and far for a message, a meaning or anything explaining to me why the effort was made.
I'll give the movie one thing, the aesthetic was interesting, but this makes it even more sad. Maybe a better artist might have, don't know, done something with it? Actually expressed something? It is just the typical male-revenge trope, which hasn't produced one good piece of art in the history of cinema, but cranked up to 11. Maybe this is a movie mostly for men, i don't get it. 😕
Now, if somebody has an interesting interpretation of Sin City or something else, i would love to hear it. It is a classic as far as people tell me, among them some with very good taste normally, and it's hard to believe they would be so wrong about it. I would love to give it another try with a new angle to appreciate its role in animation. Until then, i'll give it a 2/10 and the two points are for the aesthetics and some sequences with a genuinely menacing vibe.
(excuse spelling mistakes, English isn't my first language)

Well - it's a fairly close adaptation of a cult graphic novel, which in turn was pure exploitation under the disguise of neo noire..
Seems like you're simply not the audience for the genre cinema. Nothing wrong with that.
Sin City is beyond amazing

Seriously: art direction, cinematography, the 'acting so hammy its good noir' vibe, cinematography, and, to top it all off, adherence to souce material. It was a masterpiece of cinema, the likes of which I have yet to have something to compare to. Not saying its the best movie ever, but damn, hot shit film for its time.

You have to thank Roberto Rodriguez for keeping the direction so close to Frank Miller's graphic novels
The intermittent use of color was appreciated

This is my favorite comic book film ever.
The presentation is absolutely fantastic. It's unique, creative, well-shot, well-lit and perfectly captures that feel of a comic book story. I also love the use of silhouettes in this movie. It has among my favorite visuals in any film. I just love the whole style of it. The characters are also deeply flawed but compelling, well-designed and have interesting stories that keep you hooked. Also, that cannibal killer antagonist is just fucking terrifying. I think he gave my favorite performance in this film. The performance and the presentation really portrayed well how evil this man is. The dialogue is also very fun and memorable. Sure, it's super blunt, cheesy and edgy but intentionally so as it is playing with the typical noir style. Some of the visuals (mainly the clearly CGI cars) look laughable but I find it acceptable as it is supposed to be cartoonish and over-the-top with its presentation and stories, which I think it succeeded pretty well.
I truly enjoyed this film and I could see myself watching it again. And it's not like I am suffering from nostalgia bias, being a teenage or being a fan of the comic book. I thought it was a genuinely really well-made film and I wouldn't put it as just a guilty pleasure film at all.
Is sin city supposed to be ironic?
Main Post:
I hear everyone praise it so much and when I checked it out I found myself utterly confused. It felt like a comic written by your uncle that won’t shut up about Fox News.
Am I missing something here? Is it supposed to make you hate the writing? Is it some weird commentary?
Because knowing some other stuff Frank millers has written I kinda get the feeling it isn’t ironic and it just leaves me confused as to what people see in it.

It's not ironic. SIN CITY is Frank Miller riffing on the crime genre he loves, and Mickey Spillane in particular.
It's basically noir done in the style of a superhero comic. Several times Marv's trenchcoat looks like it's almost a cape. That's not an accident.
Noir by its nature tends to be trashier, explicitly sexual, and violent. It revels in the darker human impulses on the spectrum: lust, murder, greed, and revenge.
The femme fatale--as in the woman so sexually irresistitible and powerful she will be the death of you? She was created in the noir genre.
There are better examples of the genre than Frank Miller, no question. However, he's not doing it wrong.
It may not be your thing. And that's okay.
Thoughts on Sin City? It's one of the most quotable films I've seen and one of my all time favorites.

This movie is absolutely fantastic. Each story line is awesome. I wish superhero movies were made more like this. So Rewatchable.
How is Sin City by Frank Miller? I want to start reading it, so is it worth it? And what must be the reading order of the books? Thanks!

It’s so hard boiled, adult, and “tough guy” that it’s almost a parody. But I think it’s probably the best thing Frank Miller has done because it’s so HIM. Most of the time he writes other characters like Batman it just feels like “Batman but if he was in Sin City”. Sin City gets to just be its crazy self.
Reading order (note that the series is intentionally non-chronological):
- The Hard Goodbye
- A Dame to Kill For
- The Big Fat Kill
- That Yellow Bastard
- Family Values
- Booze, Broads, and Bullets
- Hell and Back
